Quake death toll rises to 3 000

Jakarta - The death toll from an earthquake that shook the area around the ancient royal city of Yogyakarta has risen to 3 002, said an Indonesian government official on Saturday.
"The total death toll now is 3 002," said Direvan, an official at the social affairs ministry's disaster task force in Jakarta.
Meanwhile the Red Cross estimates that about 200 000 people have been displaced by the massive earthquake.
"It's just an estimate. Many people are afraid to go home fearing further earthquakes," said Lilis, a doctor at the Indonesian Red Cross.
The doctor said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies would ask for tents, food and medications for the people left homeless by the massive 6.2-magnitude quake.
