Jakarta - Indonesian officials put the death toll from the major earthquake on Java island at 4 611 late on Sunday, after confusion within the social affairs ministry over the number of fatalities.

Two hotlines within the ministry were issuing different figures on Sunday. One said 4 611 people had been killed in Saturday's quake.

Another revised the death toll down to 3 875.

"There was a problem of communication. But now it's been solved," said ministry official Muhammad Slamet Santoso.

He said the incident was due to a failure to update officials at both hotlines with the latest figures.

"We're supposed to have the same figures because we're under one roof," said Desi Desmawati, an official at the ministry's disaster relief centre.
