US wants to close Guantanamo
21/06/2006 15:53 - (SA)
Vienna - US President George W Bush said on Wednesday he would like to close the prison for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, but a way must first be found to send inmates there home or put them on trial.
"I would like to end Guantanamo," Bush told a news conference after an EU-US summit in Vienna.
Bush said he had "explained to leaders here our desire to send them (the Guantanamo inmates) back" but there were some "who need to be tried in US courts".
"They are cold-blooded killers" who will "murder someone if out on the street", Bush said.
He said he was waiting "for the US supreme court to determine" how they would be tried.
"We're working on the issue," Bush said.
