Two held in new UK terror raid
27/06/2006 12:35 - (SA)
London - Two people were arrested on Tuesday during a series of early morning raids by anti-terrorist police in Manchester, in the north of England, police said.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said the raids, at a number of addresses, "were targeting individuals suspected of possession of information that could be used for a terrorism purpose".
Police said Tuesday's raids were not linked to any other recent anti-terrorism operation, and that no armed police officers were involved in the arrests in the Bolton district of the city.
Seven addresses in the Tonge Moor and Great Lever areas of Bolton were raided, Britain's domestic Press Association news agency reported.
Around 250 officers were involved in the operation as a whole, but police said only 50 officers carried out the actual swoops.
London raid
On June 2 two brothers were arrested, and one of them shot and wounded, when police raided a home in east London.
They were held for several days, then released after police found no traces of explosives in the premises.
Tuesday's operation in Manchester came 10 days before the first anniversary of suicide bombings on three London subway trains and a double-decker bus in which 56 people were killed, including the four Muslim attackers.
