Rice calls Israeli FM
28/06/2006 21:40 - (SA)
Washington - US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice called Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni on Wednesday, as Israel rolled out its offensive on the Gaza Strip, the state department said.
Rice, who was in Afghanistan on Wednesday, called Livni by telephone to follow up on a conversation with her at the weekend, said state department deputy spokesperson Adam Ereli.
The earlier conversation and also a weekend telephone call with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, were disclosed by the state department on Monday.
Rice's call came as Israel launched a ground and air assault on the Gaza Strip, vowing to use "extreme measures" to rescue a teenage soldier captured by Palestinian militants.
The White House earlier offered support for the Israeli action and called on Hamas to free the soldier, Gilad Shalit, but cautioned Israel to ensure the safety of innocent Palestinian civilians.
