Mumbai - India's financial capital Mumbai came to a virtual standstill on Tuesday as a second straight day of torrential rainfall flooded much of the city.
City officials asked residents to stay at home while trains connecting suburban and downtown areas were halted after rail tracks were submerged and flights were diverted from the city due to poor visibility.
Many people in low-lying areas spent the night in flooded houses as rivers overflowed, sweeping waste-high, sewage-filled waters into their homes. Power to these areas was also cut off.
Heavy rainfall during five weeks of monsoon rains has killed 223 people across India.
Traffic snarls and water-logged streets are an annual feature during the monsoon in Mumbai, but memories of a record deluge last July that killed nearly 500 people have residents worried.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in Mumbai this year.
