Brothers held over Mumbai blasts
28/07/2006 10:46 - (SA)
Mumbai - Indian police investigating the deadly Mumbai train blasts have arrested two brothers - one a suspected senior commander of a top Muslim militant group, according to media reports on Friday.
Faizal Sheikh and Muzammil Sheikh were questioned for two weeks on suspicion of being members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba group and were arrested late on Thursday, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, quoting unnamed police sources.
A total of eight suspects have now been arrested in connection with the rush-hour train blasts that left 183 dead and more than 800 injured on July 11.
But police told AFP on Wednesday the bombing team had probably already left the country.
Police were not "totally sure" what the role of the brothers was in the July 11 attacks, the Times of India reported quoting an unnamed official.
It said Faizal was suspected of being western India commander for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is fighting against Indian control of part of disputed Kashmir.
Kashmir has been the trigger of two of three wars between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan since 1947.
Police have identified Lashkar-e-Taiba as one of the most likely groups behind the bombing, acting in concert with city-based militants.
The two men, from a Mumbai suburb, had received training with the group in Pakistan and were suspected to have helped send others to camps across the border, PTI said.
