Woman in maternity ward attack
01/08/2006 14:46 - (SA)
Taipei - A Taiwanese vagrant slipped into a hospital's maternity ward to try to rape a pregnant woman, but was arrested when the woman woke up and put up a fight, press reports said on Tuesday.
Huang Hui-liang, 53, slipped into the maternity ward of the Hsinchu Hospital in west Taiwan at 10:00 on Monday, carrying a hammer.
He locked the door from the inside and began to sexually harass a pregnant woman who was alone in the ward, the United Daily News and Liberty Times reported.
The woman woke up and shrieked when Huang lifted her quilt and touched her. Huang dragged her off the bed and banged her head against the wall, the two newspapers said.
Baby delivered by emergency Caesarean
Nurses and security guards forced open the door, overpowered Huang and turned him over to police. One security guard was hit on his head by Huang's hammer and needed several stitches.
The woman was revived after the incident, but doctors were concerned to find no heartbeat for the baby, and it was delivered by Caesarean section. The woman and her baby boy are fine, reports said.
After the incident, the Hsinchu Hospital apologised to the woman's family and promised to step up security measures for patients. - Sapa-dpa
