Anthrax kills Scottish man
16/08/2006 12:06 - (SA)
London - A 50-year-old man who died last month from an infection in Scotland was killed by the rare anthrax disease, British health officials said Wednesday.
The man, who lived in the Scottish Borders region, in the south of the country, died in July but subsequent investigations have shown the cause of death was the deadly disease.
The National Health Service said his home in Hawick had been sealed off as authorities investigate.
Anthrax is caused by bacteria and can be transmitted to humans through contact with contaminated animal substances such as hair, faeces or hides, and is characterised by ulcerative skin lesions.
