America is respected - Bush

Washington - US President George W Bush insisted in an interview broadcast on Wednesday that the United States is still respected around the world despite anger over his policies.
"Listen, America is respected. People still want to come to America," he said in an interview with NBC television.
"You ask anybody in the world who wants to better their life where they want to go, and most would say America," he said to a question about the country's status in the world.
Unpopular positions
Bush conceded that many of his positions are unpopular in the world, such as his refusal to join the International Criminal Court and the Kyoto accord on global warming, and his decision to invade Iraq to depose Saddam Hussein.
"People don't like my policies necessarily ... I understand that," he said.
"You have to make decisions based upon what you think is right. You can't try to be popular. So, I would tell you America is respected."
Good work
He insisted that the United States does a lot of good around the world.
"I would tell you ... we feed the hungry. When the (Southeast Asia) tsunami hit it was the United States of America who took the lead.
"My job is to remind the people of the world of good we are doing. I think when it is all said and done, they would say 'thank goodness America took the lead fighting this war on terror and thank God they're helping lay the foundation for peace.'"
