  • New York - Senator Hillary Clinton said she hopes that the United States is ready for a female president and in an interview came as close as ever to revealing whether she has designs on the White House.

ABC television's Nightline programme asked the wife of former president Bill Clinton whether the United States was ready to accept a Ms President.

"It just depends on, you know, when and if that happens. Stay tuned," the senator for New York said on Thursday.

On Friday, ABC released parts of the interview, which is scheduled for airing on September 7.

Her remarks sparked speculation on Friday about her own plans.

Clinton "gave her strongest hint yet at whom she has in mind when she blurted out, 'Stay tuned'," The New York Post said in a front page story under a huge headline: "STAY TUNED: Hill's hint for White House run."

ABC interviewed Clinton during a campaign tour through the state of New York, where she is expected to be elected to a second term on November 7.

Clinton repeatedly tops polls asking voter preferences for a Democratic presidential candidate for 2008.
