Bush sends Ramadam greetings
23/09/2006 09:08 - (SA)
Washington - President George W Bush sent greetings on Friday to Muslims in the United States and around the world on the approaching Ramadan holy month.
The holiday, during which pious Muslims fast during daylight hours to cleanse the spirit, begins this weekend when the crescent of the new moon, called the "hilal moon," is sighted.
"Ramadan is the holiest time of the Muslim year and an important holiday when Muslims take time for prayer, fasting and personal sacrifice," Bush said in a statement.
"Ramadan is also an opportunity to gather with friends and family and show thanks for God's blessings through works of charity."
Islamic teachings hold that God delivered the Quran, the religion's holy book, to the Prophet Muhammad during Ramadan.
"Ramadan and the upcoming holiday seasons are a good time to remember the common values that bind us together," Bush said.
"Our society is enriched by our Muslim citizens whose commitment to faith reminds us of the gift of religious freedom in our country."
