Police probe Rottweiler attack
25/09/2006 06:52 - (SA)
London - Police on Monday were investigating how a five-month-old baby girl came to be attacked and mauled to death by two Rottweiler dogs at a pub in Leicester.
The girl, named by newspapers as Caydee-Lee Glaze, was savaged by guard dogs in the living quarters of The Rocket pub in the New Parks area of the city on Saturday afternoon.
The baby was rushed to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where she later died from her injuries.
Police said the two dogs, described by neighbours as guard dogs and not pets, had been destroyed.
"They were very aggressive and known to be vicious. Everybody around here was petrified of them," neighbour Amy Grimbley told the Daily Mirror.
Another neighbour said the attack had been ferocious.
"If that was my baby I'd want the animals destroyed - in fact I'd want to do it myself."
Leicestershire Police have now launched a probe into what had happened.
"The baby's distraught family have appealed for members of the media to allow them privacy at this difficult time as they seek to come to terms with the tragic death of their much-loved little girl," a police statement said.
Last month a four-year-old boy needed 200 stitches to repair injuries he received after a bulldog mauled his face in an attack in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
