New Thai PM sworn in
01/10/2006 13:16 - (SA)
Bangkok - Thailand's junta on Sunday swore in the former chief of the army as prime minister in a military-backed government, after the nation's revered king gave his approval to the appointment.
The leader of the September 19 military coup read out the royal command proclaiming retired General Surayud Chulanont as premier, in a five-minute ceremony at government house.
After coup leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin finished reading the command, Surayud prostrated himself before a shrine beneath a portrait of the king.
Surayud becomes the 24th prime minister of Thailand, replacing ousted Thaksin Shinawatra.
