Kuala Lumpur - An elderly Malaysian man suffering from heart problems and strokes suffocated after his wife, who was almost twice his weight, slipped and fell on him while trying to lift him, news reports said on Wednesday.
The couple, described by neighbours as a loving pair, were preparing to move out of their run-down house together into a nursing home when the accident occurred.
Fatimah Ramasamy Abdullah, 60, was trying to help her husband early on Tuesday from his bed when she slipped, causing both to fall to the ground, the Malay-language Berita Harian daily said.
Fatimah, who suffers diabetes and had her left leg amputated, landed on top of Syed Dawood Syed Ahmad, 66, and was unable to get up.
Syed Dawood, who weighed about 50kg, was believed to have suffocated to death under the weight of his 90kg wife, the report said.
Neighbours later found the pair unconscious and called for an ambulance.
"I tried to lift the woman, and found she was alive, but her husband had already died," said a neighbour, known as Loh.
Friends said that the couple, who have four children but were living on their own, were due to move into a nursing home after putting off the decision for months.
