US wants N Korea cargo checked
09/10/2006 18:23 - (SA)
New York - The US on Monday proposed international inspections of cargo going in
and out of North Korea to check for weapons of mass destruction
and related materials, diplomats said.
US ambassador John Bolton presented the UN security
council with 13 "elements" of a resolution he is drafting in
response to Pyongyang's reported nuclear weapon test.
Other proposals include a total arms embargo and a freeze
on assets associated with Pyongyang's's weapons of mass
destruction. Security council
members have strongly condemned North Korea's nuclear test and urged the country to refrain from further testing.
Pyongyang was asked to return
to six-party talks and abandon its nuclear programmes.
The talks include North Korea, the United States, Japan,
China, Russia and South Korea and are aimed at getting
Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear programme in exchange for aid
and security guarantees.
