Bhubaneshwar - A stampede at a Hindu temple in eastern India where nearly a half-million devotees congregated has left at least four dead and 24 injured, two of them seriously.
On Saturday, after waiting for several hours, the Hindu devotees tried to enter the deeply revered 12th century Jagannath Temple in Puri for morning prayers on the last day of a month-long festival, said temple administrator Suresh Mahapatra.
When the temple door was finally opened, it triggered a stampede.
Three pilgrims died at the temple and one of the injured succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Puri, a temple town 60km southwest of Bhubaneshwar.
The condition of two of the injured was serious, Mahapatra told The Associated Press.
Puri is one of four key Hindu pilgrimage places in India. The temple is dedicated to Jagannath, revered by Hindus as the god of the universe.
