  • New Delhi - A rabid dog found its way into the New Delhi airport, where it attacked and terrorized people for nearly three hours before a guard was able to catch it, a news report said Sunday.

The dog bit at least four people, the Times of India said of Saturday's incident.

The animal was first sighted in the open area outside one of the terminal gates, where airport staff collect passenger baggage.

A man preparing to board a plane to Srinagar in Kashmir was the first to be bitten when he stepped out of the terminal to identify his baggage, the report said.

On hearing him scream, airport staff began to chase the dog, but couldn't prevent it from biting three more people - two airline staff and a petrol pump attendant, the Times reported.

A paramilitary guard on duty finally managed to grab the canine, which was later handed to an animal care group, the report said.

The first victim, identified as Shabbir Ahmed Butt, was rushed to a hospital in New Delhi, it said.

The incident could not be independently verified, and the report did not say how officials knew the dog was rabid.

It also wasn't clear how the dog entered the airport, where security has been tightened in recent months for fear of terror attacks.
