Cellphones banned from schools
08/12/2006 13:31 - (SA)
Athens - Greece's education ministry on Thursday issued a blanket ban on use of cellular phones in schools, arguing that they disrupt classes.
The order signed by education minister Marietta Giannakou was distributed to elementary and high schools across Greece and will take immediate effect.
"For all school students, use and possession of a cellular phone is not allowed in the school area," the order said.
"Possession of a phone will be allowed under special circumstances, and the device must be kept switched off and in the student's bag."
The ban follows the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl by four male students at a school on the island of Evia in October, and the alleged videotaping of the incident on a cell phone of a fellow student.
The four male students have each been charged with criminal counts of rape but were not taken into custody pending the outcome of police and judicial investigations.
Three other students were charged with complicity. Police are trying to reconstruct deleted video files from a confiscated phone.
