Wellington - A bank manager has been jailed in New Zealand after an inept attempt to rob his own bank.

Mark Scott, a 40 year-old American, was sent to prison for six and a half years by an Auckland court after pleading guilty to the robbery of $130 000 with his wife and two young accomplices.

Scott left a door open to allow the accomplices into the bank, where they punched one woman and pushed a pregnant woman to the ground. Scott was tied up to make him look like a victim as a passerby alerted police after hearing a scream.

The accomplices were caught with their pockets stuffed full of cash while trying to make their escape from the bank at Wellsford, north of Auckland.

Police became suspicious when there were no signs of forced entry and the surveillance camera tape was missing.

Scott's wife, an aspiring singer who was sentenced to five and a half years in jail, confessed to police later the same day, leading them to a bag stuffed with $80 00 in cash.

"I guess I won't be finishing my beauty course," she told police after confessing the couple's plan.
