Wellington - A dolphin jumped out of the sea onto a boat off New Zealand on Tuesday knocking a woman unconscious and putting her in hospital with serious head injuries, a news report said.

The dolphin smashed the boat's glass windscreen which also injured another woman passenger, the TV3 channel reported.

It said dolphin experts described the incident as a freak accident, saying they had never heard of a dolphin apparently deliberately jumping into a boat before.

The woman, said to be in her late 20s, was airlifted to hospital in Auckland, the channel reported.
