'Saddam sentence a milestone'

Texas - The US called on Tuesday Saddam Hussein's upheld death sentence "a milestone" for Iraqis in the pursuit of justice, said a White House spokesperson.
"Today marks a milestone for Iraqi people's efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law," said the spokesperson.
"Saddam has received due process and the legal rights that he denied the Iraqi people."
An Iraqi appeal court judge said on Tuesday that Saddam would be hanged within 30 days, after confirming the former strongman's sentence for crimes against humanity.
Speaking to reporters in Baghdad, Judge Arif Shaheen said the verdict was final and legally binding on Iraq's government, which now has a month to get Saddam and two co-defendants to the gallows.
Officials of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government previously said they would not hesitate to carry out the sentence, and that Saddam and his fellow convicts would be hanged within days or weeks of the decision.
