London - A 5-year-old girl died Monday after being attacked by a dog, said police.

Merseyside police said they were called to the family's home in Eccleston, near Liverpool, about 320km northwest of London, at 04:30.

The child had suffered fatal injures and died at the scene. A woman, believed to be the child's grandmother, was seriously injured and was taken to a local hospital, investigators said in a statement.

Police said the dog, which they described as "pit bull terrier-type", was killed.
