  • Salonika, Greece - Two illegal immigrants of unknown origin were caught tying to slip across the border from Turkey to Greece hidden underneath a coffin in a hearse, a police source said on Monday.

The driver of the hearse, a Turkish resident of Germany, was arrested along with his two horizontal passengers at the border town of Kypoi on Saturday, the source said.

Migrants seeking illegal passage to Germany pay some $1 200 each to smugglers, according to police.

Thirteen thousand would-be immigrants were arrested crossing land borders between Turkey and Greece in the first nine months of 2006, while an additional 10 000 were caught attempting the passage by sea during the same period.
