Serial killer charges 'hogwash'
24/01/2007 07:27 - (SA)
New Westminster, British Columbia - Accused serial killer Robert Pickton laughed dismissively at the idea he was linked to the disappearances of the Vancouver women he is now accused of butchering at his pig farm, a
Canadian court heard on Tuesday.
"Hogwash.... I don't know nothing," Pickton told a police
interviewer shortly after his arrest in February 2002 on the
first two of the 26 murders he would eventually be charged
with.
A video of the interview was played for the jury in the
courtroom in New Westminster on the second day of Pickton's
trial, which prosecutors say will prove the 57-year-old pig
farmer to be Canada's deadliest serial killer.
On the tape, Pickton could be seen giving a short laugh
when he was told he was being investigated for the
disappearance of up to 50 Vancouver prostitutes.
Prosecutors told the court on Monday that Pickton told an
undercover office in another interview that he had killed 49
women and planned to kill one more.
'I'm just a pig man'
In the tape played on Tuesday, Pickton described himself as a
simple working man. "I'm just a pig man, that's all I've got to
say," he told the interviewer.
Police had not found any human remains on the farm at the
time of the interview.
Prosecutors told the court on Monday that Pickton butchered
his victims after he killed them. They said evidence will
include at least two heads that had been cut in half, along
with other severed bones found in buckets at his farm in
suburban Port Coquitlam, near Vancouver.
Prosecutors also said they have a witness who will describe
seeing Pickton dismember a woman at the slaughterhouse at the
ramshackle farm.
The women Pickton is accused of killing were among more
than 60 drug-dependant prostitutes who disappeared from
Vancouver's Downtown Eastside - one of Canada's poorest
neighborhoods - from the late 1980s until late 2001.
Police initially raided Pickton's farm looking for an
illegal gun. But the case quickly became a homicide
investigation and murder counts were added over the next three
years.
Pickton has pleaded not guilty.
