Manhunt for gang rapists
01/02/2007 19:31 - (SA)
Islamabad - Police in Pakistan said on Thursday they have launched a manhunt for members of a gang of 11 men who allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl and paraded her naked through a village of southern Sindh province.
Six men were taken into custody after the incident in which the gang abducted the girl, claiming one of her cousins had an affair with a woman from their family.
At least two men raped the girl, who was forced her to march half-naked through Habib Labalo village before neighbours came to her aid.
"Raids are being carried out and we have also deployed undercover agents. Hopefully we will apprehend the perpetrators soon," investigation officer Aftab Farooqi said.
The father of the victim informed police of the attack at the weekend. Farooqi said those on the run include one of the rapists. Prosecution will hinge on a medical examination of the victim.
Women are frequent targets of violence in the settlement of family feuds and honour disputes in Pakistan. The government last year enacted a new law providing some relief to the women from controversial laws dealing with sex crimes.
