Sydney - A suspected armed robber got exactly what he should have expected when he bit a police dog in the New Zealand city of Napier, said news reports on Saturday.

He got bitten back - and Edge the German shepherd proved the better biter, Australia's ABC Radio reported from Wellington, New Zealand.

The confrontation between the knife-wielding man and Edge came after police disturbed a grocery shop robbery on Tuesday in which the owner was stabbed.

One of the alleged robbers was immediately taken into custody but the other put up a fight.

It's not the first time Edge has taken on and beaten an assailant.

Last year, the canine needed surgery and a blood transfusion after being stabbed in the chest by an offender.
