Tornado rips through N Orleans
13/02/2007 16:34 - (SA)
New Orleans - An apparent tornado ripped through the New Orleans area early on Tuesday, damaging buildings and knocking out power to thousands of people.
The storm, which hit around 03:30, tore the roof off a hotel in Westwego, which is across the Mississippi River from the city. It also damaged roofs in New Orleans.
At least three people were brought to a hospital. Two Westwego residents were injured, but neither was seriously hurt, mayor Robert Billiot said.
About 16 000 people were without power in New Orleans' Carrolton area, 3 000 in Westwego, and 2 000 in scattered outages in Metairie, west of the city, and eastern New Orleans, a spokesperson for Entergy Corp. said.
Billiot said the storm destroyed dozens of homes and businesses in Westwego. The city opened a shelter at Worley Middle School.
"There is just so much destruction," he said.
