India nabs 5 for train blasts
22/02/2007 12:04 - (SA)
New Delhi - Police in India have detained five people in connection with the bomb attack on a train to Pakistan that left 68 dead, news reports said on Thursday.
Security agencies took the five into custody in co-ordinated raids late on Wednesday in the northern state of Rajasthan, the central state of Uttar Pradesh and the old walled quarters of Delhi, the PTI news agency reported.
Sixty-eight mainly Pakistani passengers died and at least 60 were injured late on Sunday after two explosive devices, supplemented with fuel, gutted two coaches of the Samjhauta Express that had left New Delhi for Lahore, Pakistan, with more than 600 passengers on board.
It was not clear who was behind the blasts, and no militant group has so far claimed responsibility.
Pakistan had requested a joint investigation into the blasts, but India has said its agencies will carry out the inquiry but will share information with Pakistan.
The two countries set up a joint panel for cooperation in fighting terrorism last year, and its first meeting was scheduled to be held March 6 in Islamabad.
