MI5 gets new boss
07/03/2007 19:37 - (SA)
London - Senior intelligence official Jonathan Evans has been named the new head of MI5, Britain's domestic spy agency, the government said on Wednesday.
Evans, 49, is currently deputy to director general Eliza Manningham-Buller. She announced last year that she would step down in April after four years in charge.
Evans would take up the post on April 8, the government said in a statement.
MI5 is in the midst of a campaign to boost its strength by 50% to about 3 500 employees, as it confronts what it says is a growing threat from domestic terrorism.
For decades the government would not publicly acknowledge the existence of MI5, and its leadership remained a state secret until 1992. But the secretive agency has made moves to appear more open in a bid to attract new recruits. It has set up a website and launched advertising campaigns aimed at attracting more women and ethnic minorities.
