New York - At least 35 cats and dogs died in a house fire, while a slew of other animals, including possums, crows and a two-metre-long python, were rescued, said police.
The animals' owner, a woman in her 40s whom police did not name, was not hurt in the blaze on Wednesday.
Both the cause of the fire and why so many animals were in the residence are under investigation.
Twenty dogs and 15 cats died of smoke inhalation in the fire, said police.
Officials said the owner had 10 other dogs and five other cats that survived - along with three turtles, two crows, two possums, a rabbit, a squirrel and a python.
Those animals were taken to a veterinarian, said Pat Densieski, an animal control officer for Southampton Town.
It is under investigation, but officials said they do not believe the woman was running an animal shelter.
It would be illegal to do so in a private home.
"It seems she just loved animals," said Southampton Town police sergeant Mike Joyce.
