Shooting at JFK leaves 1 dead
06/04/2007 16:15 - (SA)
New York - A shooting in a car at John F Kennedy International Airport on Friday morning left one person dead, authorities said.
Three people were involved in the shooting, which occurred in a car on airport property, according to Alan Hicks, a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport.
The people involved in the 06:00 (10:00 GMT) shooting then drove away, said spokesperson Richard Campbell.
A car involved in the shooting was stopped in a nearby neighbourhood soon afterward, though it was not known what role that car had played, New York City police's John Sweeney said.
Police said the exact location of the shooting, the number of people involved and the extent or nature of any injuries were unclear.
The shooting was in a public part of the airport, not a secured area, Hicks said. He said the shooting had no significant effect on the airport's operations.
The shooting came less than a day after a man breached security at one of the airport's terminals, causing security officials to evacuate parts of two terminals and delaying some flights for hours, according to authorities. However, the shooting and the security breach did not appear to be related, Hicks said.
