New York - Front-running Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton's favourable rating is slipping in the state she represents, reported a statewide poll on Monday.
New York voters are not quite as sure they prefer her to Republican Rudy Giuliani, according to the poll.
The latest poll from Siena College's Research Institute had Clinton leading Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, 48% to 43%, down from the 51% to 39% lead she enjoyed in a March poll by the research institute.
Clinton's favourable rating among New York voters was at 50 percent in the latest poll, down from 56% last month.
"The fall in her rating has been dramatic since January, when she had a 60% to 33% favourability rating," said Steven Greenberg, a spokesperson for the Siena poll.
The Clinton drop also was evident in the race for the Democratic nomination. The new poll had Clinton leading Barack Obama, 39% to 17%.
The race is on
She held a 32% point lead over the Illinois senator last month among New York voters.
National polls also have shown the race tightening.
There was no immediate comment from the Clinton campaign.
On the Republican side, Giuliani continued to enjoy a strong lead for the nomination among his home state voters - 47% to 16% for senator John McCain of Arizona. No other Republican was in double digits.
Siena's telephone poll of 980 registered voters was conducted April 16-20 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
