15 killed in Indian bus crash
25/04/2007 14:46 - (SA)
Jammu - A minibus rolled off a mountainous road into a small stream in India's Jammu-Kashmir state on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people, said police.
Army and police rescuers were looking for another 30 people missing from the overcrowded bus, said Tahir Butt, superintendent of police.
The bus plunged nearly 30m into the stream cascading down the hillside, said Butt.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known. It occurred near Kalai, a town nearly 250km northwest of Jammu, the capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state.
Rescue teams have so far recovered 15 bodies, he said.
The bus had a capacity of 25 people, but many of those travelling were sitting on rooftop, said Butt.
The bus accident was the second in the area this month. On April 17, another bus accident killed 14 people and injured another 20, police said.
Road accidents are common in India, caused by reckless driving, aging vehicles and bad roads.
