Russia crushes gay protest
27/05/2007 13:15 - (SA)
Moscow - Russian police arrested Russian gay rights activists and a leading British campaigner on Sunday as they demonstrated outside the Moscow mayor's office.
Russian gay community leader Nikolai Alexeyev and two other activists were detained outside the building in central Moscow at the start of a demonstration by about a few dozen homosexual rights activists. Also detained was veteran British gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.
Hundreds of ultra-nationalists converged, some of them punching and kicking the gay demonstrators before riot police moved in to separate the two sides.
Several far-right members were also detained.
