  • Amsterdam - The Dutch police arrested four men earlier this month who allegedly infected other men with HIV/Aids, reports said on Wednesday.

The victims, who are gay, attended private gay sex parties in Groningen, a city in the northern Netherlands close to the German border.

Police received the first complaints about the parties - notorious for unsafe sex - already in June 2006 and immediately published warnings to all potential visitors.

The police were alarmed by a sudden sharp rise in HIV infections, which they said was related to the sex parties.

The police say the victims had been sedated with the party drug GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate) and received injections of HIV-infected blood by the four suspects.

Police found large quantities of GHB on the four suspects.

In February 2007 the first victim filed a report with the police. The suspects were arrested in early May.

Used in low doses, GHB is popular in dance clubs. In higher dosages, it can cause unconsciousness.

GHB is often used during sexual assaults because it renders the victim incapable of resisting and may cause memory problems that could complicate prosecution. - Sapa-dpa
