Suspects arrested in JFK plot
02/06/2007 19:29 - (SA)
Washington - US authorities have arrested several suspects in an alleged terror plot against JFK airport in New York City, US media reported on Saturday.
CNN television, citing a law enforcement source, said four suspects were planning to target ground operations at the airport and WNBC television in New York reported the attack would be aimed at a pipeline carrying jet fuel.
Three of the four suspects have been arrested, CNN said.
Authorities said no attacks were imminent and that no attack had been planned against airplanes, media reported.
US agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced a news conference for 17:00 GMT.
One of those arrested was a former cargo worker at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City who authorities say recruited an FBI informant to help blow up jet fuel tanks and pipelines at the airport, law enforcement officials told ABC News.
The former cargo worker, originally from Guyana, had been under surveillance and allegedly met with a radical group in Trinidad, ABC reported, quoting unnamed sources.
Additional arrests have been made in Trinidad, it said.
The planning for the plot was said to be in the works for two to three years but sources claim the alleged plotters were nowhere near ready to put it into place, ABC and other media reported.
