2008: Hillary still ahead
03/06/2007 21:13 - (SA)
Washington - Hillary Clinton continues to hold a substantial lead over fellow US Senator Barack Obama and the other Democratic presidential contenders, according to a new poll released ahead of a major candidates' debate on Sunday.
The poll by Washington Post-ABC News placed Clinton in the lead of the Democratic field with 42%. Obama was second at 27% and former senator John Edwards third at 11%.
Those results for Clinton and Obama were virtually unchanged from polling in April, but the results showed a sharp drop in support for Edwards, who has slipped by six percentage points.
In the volatile Republican nomination race, former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani remains the leader, at 34%, followed by Senator John McCain at 20%, former US Senator Fred Thompson at 13% and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney at 10%.
Thompson is still undeclared, and his believed impending announcement could dramatically shake up the race, political observers said.
The poll found support softening for Giuliani from a poll conducted in February.
The survey results come as Democrats prepare to take part in a nationally televised debate in the political bellwether state of New Hampshire, site of the first - and potentially one of the most important - primary election contests.
Republicans are scheduled to face off on in a debate on Tuesday night.
