Italian cops make terror arrests
07/06/2007 14:52 - (SA)
Rome - Police in Milan on Thursday arrested a group of people who allegedly provided logistical and financial support to the al-Qaeda-linked Salafist Group for Call and Combat, Italian officials said.
About 10 people had been arrested, according to a police statement, but officials said the operation in the northern Italian city was still ongoing and it was not yet known how many suspects had been taken into custody.
Police planned to give more details at a news conference later on Thursday.
Algeria's Salafist Group for Call and Combat, which changed its name to al-Qaeda in Islamic North Africa when it announced its alliance with al-Qaeda in January, is on the US list of terrorist organisations.
The group claimed responsibility for twin bombings on April 11 in Algiers that killed 30 people.
