G8 agrees on climate goal

Heiligendamm - World leaders meeting in Germany have sealed an agreement which foresees them making "substantial" cuts in greenhouse gases and securing a post-Kyoto deal by 2009, said Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"In terms of targets, we agreed on clear language that recognises that (rises in) CO2 emissions must first be stopped and then followed by substantial reductions," Merkel told reporters at a G8 summit in the Baltic coast resort of Heiligendamm.
She said G8 countries agreed to "consider" her aim for a 50% cut in emissions by 2050, but leaders do not appear to have committed to any specific targets.
