'Out of control' student shot
08/06/2007 09:22 - (SA)
New Jersey - A student armed with scissors was shot and critically injured by a police officer outside a school for children with emotional or behavioural disorders.
Police responded to Garfield Park Academy on Thursday after several callers reported that a male student was "out of control" and threatening staffers, students and teachers with scissors, Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D Bernardi said.
When police arrived, they found the student outside the school and saw he was holding two pairs of scissors. The officers repeatedly told the boy to drop the scissors, but he would not, Bernardi said.
The student continued to act aggressively, Bernardi said. A 19-year member of the force fired two shots that struck him in the abdomen and chest.
The student was in critical but stable condition on Thursday at a Camden hospital. Authorities would not identify him or give his age.
Smith was put on administrative leave as standard procedure after a police shooting, said Gregory Rucker, acting police director.
The county prosecutor's office and the Willingboro Detective Bureau were investigating.
