  • Dubai - A British tourist has been jailed for four years in the United Arab Emirates for possession of 0.07g of marijuana, a report said on Friday.

The 25-year-old man, identified only as WH, was caught at Dubai airport with the tiny amount of marijuana in his pocket, in addition to "two hardly noticeable slivers of hashish", the Gulf News daily said.

The defendant insisted that he had forgotten he even had the traces of narcotics on his person and maintained that he had no intention of using them in the UAE.

But the Dubai court rejected his defence at Thursday's trial and convicted him of possessing illegal drugs for personal use, Gulf News said.

It did not specify when the Briton was arrested.

The Western-oriented emirate of Dubai has turned itself into a major leisure hub for the oil-rich Gulf and draws millions of visitors every year.

But the United Arab Emirates imposes tough penalties for all drug-related offences - four years is the usual sentence for possession and trafficking carries the death penalty.
