Car bomb: UK probes insurgents
29/06/2007 14:53 - (SA)
London - British police and security services are probing possible international links, including in Iraq, after a bomb was defused in central London, sources said on Friday.
A security source quoted by Britain's domestic Press Association news agency said it was feasible the incident had overseas links as insurgents in Iraq had used similar methods.
"It is entirely possible," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"There are various things: it is outside a nightclub, it is a vehicle-borne device, it is close to the anniversary of the July 7 attacks. But we are keeping an open mind."
At a news conference on Friday, the head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism unit Peter Clarke refused to speculate on who might be responsible, but did say certain aspects "resonated with previous plots", without elaborating.
The car, which was discovered smoking outside a nightclub in the Haymarket entertainment district, was found to contain "significant quantities" of petrol and nails plus a number of gas cylinders, he said.
Police explosives specialists made safe the device and it was taken away for forensic examination.
