London - Police carried out a controlled explosion on Tuesday on a suspect package found outside Hammersmith underground station in London, a British Transport Police spokesperson said.
Hammersmith and another nearby station were closed due to the incident, which comes amid heightened alert across Britain following failed attacks in London and Glasgow.
The controlled explosion was carried out by the Metropolitan Police at 09:10, the spokesperson said without being able to confirm whether there were any explosives in the package.
"At 08:25 this morning British Transport Police responded to reports of an unattended package outside Hammersmith station. Both Hammersmith and Baron's Court station were closed as a precaution," he said.
"A controlled explosion was carried out at 09:10 this morning by the Metropolitan Police Service."
Trains were ordered not to stop at the two stations due to the incident.
A Scotland Yard spokesperson was not immediately able to confirm the controlled explosion.
Britain raised its national security threat level to "critical" at the weekend after two failed car bombings in London on Friday and an attack on Glasgow airport on Saturday.
