  • Sydney - An environmental protester wearing only a skimpy swimsuit and bathing cap was charged with assault on Wednesday after allegedly attempting to run towards Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

The 23-year-old man, wearing a blue Speedo - swimming briefs jokingly dubbed by Australians as "budgie smugglers" - is accused of shoving a policeman who tried to block his path during the bizarre protest.

The demonstrator, who had the words "climate change" scrawled across his chest, shouted "What are you doing about global warming? There is no snow, there is no snow" as Howard approached.

"A plain clothes police officer attempted to stop the man; however, he allegedly shoved the officer in the chest and again attempted to run past him towards the prime minister," New South Wales police said in a statement.

The man was quickly bundled into a nearby toilet by security staff and was charged by police in the coastal town of Bega, where the incident occurred.

He was conditionally granted bail abd is scheduled to appear in Bega local court on July 24.
