MP to challenge Livingstone
16/07/2007 13:48 - (SA)
London - MP Boris Johnson will stand for the post of London mayor for his Conservative Party, his office said on Monday, a move that could pose a real threat to incumbent Ken Livingstone.
Johnson, an affable parliamentarian who has become a
household name thanks to appearances on popular television
shows, had been mulling whether to stand for one of the most
high-profile jobs in British politics.
Asked whether Johnson would enter the mayoral race, a
spokeswoman in his parliamentary office said: "Yes, he will
stand".
His decision gives the Conservatives a real shot at
unseating Livingstone. The party had been searching for a
heavyweight candidate for the post.
