Sacred bull saved
16/07/2007 15:05 - (SA)
London - A British court on Monday quashed a decision to slaughter a sacred bull which tested positive for bovine tuberculosis, after protests by Hindu monks.
The decision to slaughter Shambo, a six-year-old Friesian, was unlawful and should be reconsidered, Judge Gary Hickinbottom said during a High Court hearing in the Welsh city of Cardiff.
Last month, officials at the partially-devolved Welsh Assembly recommended the bull be put down in line with government policy on animals that fail a bovine tuberculosis skin test to prevent the disease spreading.
Shambo has been kept in isolation at the Hindu temple in Llanpumsaint, near Carmarthen, since testing positive, which the 20 monks and six nuns at the temple believe will help prevent their other animals becoming infected.
The monks and nuns had threatened to form a human chain to prevent the bull's slaughter as such action runs contrary to their religious beliefs.
