'Al-Qaeda regaining strength'
17/07/2007 21:39 - (SA)
Washington - Al-Qaeda has regenerated its capability to attack the United States and will step up efforts to send operatives, a new US intelligence assessment concluded on Tuesday.
The report comes nearly six years after the administration of US President George W Bush launched the "war on terror" against the al-Qaeda terror network following the September 11 2001 attacks.
"We assess the group has protected or regenerated key elements of its Homeland attack capability, including: a safe haven in the Pakistan Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), operational lieutenants, and its top leadership," the report said.
"Although we have discovered only a handful of individuals in the United States with ties to the al-Qaeda senior leadership since 9/11, we judge that al-Qaeda will intensify its efforts to put operatives here."
