  • Dhaka - Officials say flash floods caused by rainstorms have killed 11 people and trapped over 200 000 more across Bangladesh.

The death toll from monsoon-fed rains reached 11 after three more people died from flood-related causes in the worst-hit eastern district of Feni, local disaster management officials said.

Earlier the authorities said eight people were killed, including four from the same family, in north-eastern Bangladesh that has been gripped by flooding for the past week.

The three additional deaths were reported from Pabna district in the north of the country. Private radio reports said the three had died of acute intestinal diseases caused by waterborne epidemics.

The Chittagong seaport hoisted warning signals for ships and fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal on Monday, advising small fishing boats to stay in safe shelters near the coast until squalls in the area eased.

At least 50 000 people were evacuated from vulnerable areas to makeshift flood shelters in community centres and schools as the two major rivers Ganges and Brahmaputra were swollen by seasonal torrents.
