Quake standards spare Japan 1 000s on alert for volcano Residents cut tsunami sirens 'Tsunami warning' causes chaos

Jakarta - A powerful earthquake off eastern Indonesia triggered a tsunami warning on Thursday, and sent panicked residents fleeing from buildings, authorities and witnesses said.

The magnitude 7.0 quake struck under the Maluku Sea at a depth of 33km, the US geological survey said on its website.

Its epicentre was more than 200km north of Ternate city.

Indonesia's geological agency issued a tsunami warning that was broadcast on national television. It was later withdrawn.
